Rotary Young Chef  2007

This competition has been going for a few years but not taken up in Scotland. We have an opportunity to add this to the existing Springboard competition as it is to a similar criteria and agenda and is supported by Filppo Berio [olive oil] and Jamie Oliver [15 restaurant as in TV]

The initial contact is Mr. Archie Bell from the Rotary Club in Central Edinburgh.

He is finding out more from other participating clubs as to the experience and advice he can pass on to us.  If we channel all initial enquiries through him, he can put you in touch with a club nearer you or with a club who already has a connection with your school in an other aspect. He has not had the opportunity to participate in such an event and is willing to learn the needs of competitors and supporters.

I discussed various options of taking this competition forward as it would be similar to the existing Springboard competition but it has a different criteria as it is linked to a healthy meal production. I emphasised and explained the impartiality of the judging panel, the mentoring process and the competition requirements for candidates, schools and the follow up requirements for winners. I recommended as the judging panels the existing Academy Culinaire and the Federation of Chefs Scotland as the principal Chefs organisations of professional standing and for rotary to invite.

I also explained the needs of schools and students, the time and resources used to get the competition started and organised, the need to have support at a school heat, a local heat and a regional heat before it becomes a national final.

Support requirements in the form of  judges, teachers and mentors, industrial support, transport and family support for travel and minimum hospitality arrangements.

We do not know the exact criteria but there is a leaflet with basic criteria implications, which will be sent to you if you are interested with the local contact address.

The timing is in line with the autumn term and national finals to be by April / May 2008. This would allow us to have the two competitions parallel but have 2 competitors going forward representing your school.

National Qualifications Database
Written by John Sowerby
Friday, 23 March 2007
Dear Colleagues,

National Qualifications Database - by school subject and level.

As you will recall we developed a database which carried all relevant information about the range of subjects and levels presented in our schools.

The database allows you to search for schools teaching subjects at levels you may want to collaborate with for example.

The database has now been amended with your help and it will be mostly correct.  (Some schools did not make a return and we used information provided by the Business Manager which may not be accurate in every case).

The database is not locked consequently you may alter your own school data and if everyone does this it will remain contemporary.

The database file is stored in RESOURCES > QUALITY IMPROVEMENT.
